Gallery1993 is pleased to present The Real Artwork, a new performance piece written and directed by Ann Hirsch and performed by the gallery’s curator, Seymour Polatin. In this performance, Hirsch uses the essential elements of Gallery1993 to create a narrative that questions notions of reality, personal history, and dialogues about the art world. The construction of this piece was inspired in part by reality television, a medium in which she has previously worked. Hirsch works to extract the essential paradox of the medium, being that the resulting media is both a true representation of a person’s actions while also being a constructed fiction. She finds that this paradox is reflected in today’s current news and political climate, where elements of truth are extracted to construct a larger narrative by producers. The 20-25 minute performance will take place while driving around the viewer’s choice meeting location and will promptly return them back to the location of origin. Hirsch incorporates the inherent theatrics of Gallery1993’s format to create an original experience specific to the exhibition. In reference to the complicated topic of activism in the art world that is addressed in The Real Artwork, the opening reception will consist of a silent auction of works that Hirsch produced between 2006 - 2007 with all proceeds donated to the American Civil Liberties Union.
